The province of Rome is located in the central Italian region of Lazio; it is bathed on the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the most populated Italian province and within its boundaries contains the independent state of Vatican City. The capital city of the province, also called Rome, is also the capital of the Italian republic. The city of Rome is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire world and its historical center, which contains monuments that testify to over 2800 years of history, has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rome sights to see include, obviously, the Coliseum, the Roman Forum and the Pantheon. Other Rome attractions include the largest mosque in Europe and one of the largest synagogues in Italy, Saint Peter’s Cathedral in Vatican City and Santa Maria degli Angeli.
