Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria on the continent of Africa. Algiers is nicknamed Alger la Blanche ("Algiers the White") after the many bright white buildings that stand proudly throughout the city. This Mediterranean city is located on the west side of a bay is an ancient city that dates back to Phoenician times when it was a commercial outpost called Ikosim and it later became a Roman town. Algiers is now becoming a popular destination for international seminars and conferences and in 2007 it was named the capital for Arab culture. There are many points of interest for visitors to the beautiful and bustling city of Algiers. One of the first stops for tourists is the Casbah, which means the Citadel, and is founded on the old Roman town of Icosium. It is a small city which is home to 17th century mosques, such as el Djedid, which was built in 1660. The Casbah is a labyrinth of lanes and alleys and it is a wonderful place to wander around and soak up the atmosphere.

Other tourist attractions include the district of Bab El Oued which is famous for its “three clocks”. Kouba is a little old-fashioned village made up of traditional Algerian buildings. The Ketchaoua mosque was the Cathedral of St Phillipe, which dated from 1845 and was built on the ruins of a mosque from 1612. It has Moorish and Byzantine influences in the architecture. Algiers is a fascinating city that reveals each of its historical influences in layers. EasyToBook.com has great cheap hotels that will make your Algiers experience an incredible one.
