The Amsterdam Central Station is the only train station located in the inner city. The Amsterdam Central Station backs onto the Amsterdam Harbor, and is literally surrounded by canals. The station is also just minutes from the Schiphol Airport, which makes traveling through the city and to the airport very easy. One of the first things that you will notice when you arrive at Amsterdam Central Station is the thousands of bicycles that are parked around the station. Most local people simply ride bikes around the city since the area is so flat and so densely populated. Bikes are a terrific option for getting around the area and preventing pollution and saving space. If you are an adventurous person you may wish to consider renting a bike at the station and using it to get around Amsterdam. This is a great way to see the sites and allows you to stop at any spots of interest. All international trains arrive and depart from the Amsterdam Central Station. There is also a universal ticket called a strippencaart that can be used when using public transportation including trains and trams. Depending on the zones you will be crossing the driver or conductor will simply stamp the select number of tickets on the strippencaart. When the total amount is used you will just purchase another ticket.
