Buenos Aires is a primarily Catholic city. The Metropolitan Cathedral is the main church for the capital city and overlooks the Plazo de Mayo. Construction started on the Cathedral in 1753 though nearly a century later the building would not yet be completed. The architecture is a mixture of several styles given the length of time it took for construction to be finished. There are twelve columns in the front of the Metropolitan Cathedral to represent each apostle. The interior was decorated in the 19th century with various frescoes and mosaics that decorate the floor.

The Metropolitan Cathedral, along with being a major center of worship is also the resting place for General Jose de San Martin. His mausoleum can be reached from with in the church through the right aisle. His tomb is surrounded by three female figures that respresent the countries of Chile, Peru, and of course Argentina. The Metropolitan Cathedral is loved by worshipers and visitors for its opulent beauty and history.
