For a touch of the macabre and a glimpse into the past the Cementerio de la Recoleta is the place to visit. This area is a great example of the common cemetery style from the late 1800’s and into the early 1900’s. The cemetery started as a modest church graveyard before it was open to the public in 1882. Many of the tombs and crypts are above ground constructed from materials that were imported from European countries such as France and Italy. The entire cemetery is fascinating and even a bit creepy. There are plenty of tales and stories about wandering spirits to keep the imagination active and spine tingling.
There are plenty of notable and famous Argentineans buried here. Perhaps the one that draws the most crowds is of Eva Peron. While the task navigating the labyrinthine streets of this necropolis may seem daunting, there are maps available and to find Eva Peron, all one needs to do is follow the crowds.
