What you need to know before traveling to Chubut

The province of Chubut is in the northern part of Patagonia in Argentina. One of the principal attractions for visitors who come to the discount hotels in Chubut is Parque Nacional Lago Puelo (Lake Puelo National Park). The beautiful turquoise colored lake is fed by four rivers and is surrounded by forest covered mountains. The park is a popular place for swimming, camping, hiking and boating. Lago Puelo is on the international border, and so can be used to cross over to Chile. The lake creates its own micro-climate in which the white-blossomed ulmo tree can thrive. If you are lucky you might see the shy huemal (Andean deer) and the puda (miniature deer).

From your comfortable budget hotel in Chubut you can visit such picturesque communities as El Maiten, which was made famous by Paul Theroux’s opus “The Old Patagonian Express”. Here you can see the antique steam locomotives and railway cars that once rolled through the Patagonian countryside. You can also see old locomotives in La Trochita, where the National Steam Train Festival is held every February. The fiesta also includes music, bronco-busting, horse races and great local food. In the summer there is a round trip train excursion to Norquinco. This trip is available only by reservation. Nearby Esquel is the gateway to Parque Nacional Los Alcerces. Be sure to see the Museo de Culturas Originarias Patagonicas.
