Although it is relatively small, the town of Basavilbaso in the region of Entre Rios has an important place in the history of Argentina. It originally developed because of the Gobernador Basavilbaso Station. The station was built by the Ferrocarril Central Entrerriano rail company and eventually became part of the Entre Rios Railway. Discount hotels in Basavilbaso are still found around the station, but don’t be surprised to hear the hotel owners call their town ‘Basso’ for short.
Basavilbaso is important for another reason; it was the first colony of Jewish settlers in the country. The original settlers were Russian, but other settlers came after 1887 from Italy, Germany, and elsewhere. The group formed the first agricultural cooperative in the area, Cooperativa Agricola Lucienville, which you can still visit today. You can find discount hotels in Basavilbaso near several of the Jewish synagogues and landmarks still in town. Visit Sinagoga Tefila L’Moisés, the Sinagoga Novibuco I, or the Jewish Cemetery (Cementerio Israelita).
