What you need to know before traveling to Santa Fé

Santa Fe is one of Argentina’s twenty-three provinces. Its capital is the city of Santa Fe. With a population of more than 450,000, Santa Fe has been called a big city with a small town atmosphere. If you stay in one of the discount hotels in Santa Fe’s downtown area, you’ll be in the Colonial district where everybody seems very laid back. However, if you’re in a budget hotel in Santa Fe’s Recoleta district on a Friday or Saturday night, you’ll see the place come alive as university students hit the bars and night spots.

The most important historical landmark in Santa Fe is the Convento Y Museo De San Francisco. This 17th century Franciscan monastery is now a museum. It is a beautiful building, with walls more than a meter thick. One monk is still in residence. Another 17th century building houses the Provincial Historical Museum. Here you can see some excellent religious paintings and antique artifacts, as well as a viceroy’s sedan chair. At Cerveceria Santa Fe, the city’s own brewery, you can have a tour of the plant and sample Santa Fe Lager. The children will love the Granja La Esmeralda, a small experimental zoo that exhibits toucans, pumas, jaguars and a giant ant-eater.
