The Royal Botanic Gardens is in the heart of Sydney and dates back to the early 1800's. During colonial times the area of the gardens was used by the governor as an area between his estate and the penal colony. In 1831 the area was opened to the public with the addition of roads and paths. The gardens cover over 30 hectares and is removed from the hustle and bustle of city life by a variety of exotic and native plants.

There are several areas to the Royal Botanic Garden each with its own distinctive features and characteristics. The Tropical Center is a favorite with guests and the Pyramid Glasshouse is definitely worth exploring. There is also a Herb Garden, Rose Garden, and the newly added Oriental Garden. The Royal Botanic Garden is great for picnics and idle strolls. Bird watchers will enjoy the gardens as it attracts a wide variety of birds like the ibis or the cockatoo.
