St James Church is the oldest church in Sydney and is a significant historical and cultural landmark. Constructed in 1824 the church has continued to be a focal point of worship in Sydney and surrounding areas. Francis Greenway designed the church which sits opposite Hyde Park Barracks. The original purpose of the St James Church was a courthouse but was later changed before construction on the building actually started.

St James Church is an Anglo-Catholic church and is a focal point of festivals during holy days such as Easter and Christmas. St James Church is a favorite location for visitors that come to see Sydney's historical buildings and monuments. The church is worth the effort of a visit if only for the pipe organ which is one of the finest in the country. St James Church is known for its musical programs and its liberal stance concerning certain issues in the church.
