Barrenjoey is a dramatic land of sandstone and native plant life with the sea crashing against the shore. Due to the dangerous nature of the area and the turbulent seas, a lighthouse was deemed necessary. The Barrenjoey Lighthouse was completed in 1881 and was much more effective and efficient then the old method of warning sailors about the shore. Before the completion of the Barrenjoey Lighthouse lights were raised in baskets to guide sailors to safety in particularly nasty weather. Barrenjoey Lighthouse is constructed of sandstone and beautifully observed. There is a lighthouse keeper cottage and two cottages for assistants still on site and carefully maintained. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has spent considerable time and effort in the restoration effort of the three cottages and of the Barrenjoey Lighthouse.

The Barrenjoey Lighthouse is a wonderful example of the beauty of historical lighthouses. It is an important symbol to this region and to all of Australia. There are several paths that visitors can walk which will take them from the Barrenjoey Lighthouse to other parts of Barrenjoey.
