The city of Amstetten is the capital of the district of Amstetten in Lower Austria. Once known as Amistein, the city of Amstetten is located next to the Ybbs River, and has been an important transportation center since ancient times. It is the largest community in the Mostviertel region. The Amstetten Regional Museum tells the story of the pastoral lifestyle that existed here before the Industrial Revolution. While you are in Amstetten be sure to see the beautiful town hall and the Gothic Church of St. Agatha. Also go to the 15th century Church of St. Stephen which has lovely frescoes illustrating the Last Judgment. The Mauthausen Museum is a memorial to the victims who died in the nearby Mauthausen-Gusen Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Six kilometers southwest of Amstetten is the village of Burg Ulmerfeld where you can see a medieval castle which has an impressive collection of weapons.
