The idea of a farm museum is popular in some regions of Austria. It is a novel and effective way of educating an urban population on rural life. The Alpine Museum on the Tannberg Mountain (Alpenmuseum uf m Tannberg) takes the experience a step further. The museum is in a former working farm from 1602. A cowshed on the premises dates from expansion of the farm during 1802. The museum combines the past history of the farm with a working knowledge of the industry to provide visitors with a unique experience.

Part of the fun of the Alpine Museum is getting there. The best way to arrive is by hiking from Lech. In this way, you get to wander by the Burstegg homes – 13 houses in the region since 1835. They are part of the idea of the Lecher Museum. The Museum prides itself on retaining the farming heritage of the region. Within the museum, there is an active dairy kitchen. One of the exhibits is a complete set of cheese making tools. These were in use until the farm ceased production in 1998.You can see the thermometer, cheese kettle (sinnkesse) different ladles and wooden bowls (gebsa) once used in the process. Traditional techniques are explained. In the former dairy barns, you can see special exhibits.
