In the town of Eisenstadt, the most important and influential family has been the Esterházy family. They have been responsible for construction of the church and other local edifices. Prince Paul Esterházy was behind much of the cultural aspects of town life. He brought Haydn to live and perform here. He also ensured the composer had a fitting mausoleum in the local church.

The Esterházy family had a castle. Castle Esterházy began its existence in around 1390 on the site of an earlier fortification. It ventured into the Baroque but, under Pierre Charles Moreau, the castle achieved a more neo-classical look. The façade supporting the front balcony has Tuscan columns. It has an English-style park surrounding it. There are mirrored halls and, of course, there is the famous Haydnsaal in the north wing and the Haydnzimmer in the west wing. The Haydn Hall is three storys. The ceiling frescoes are by Carpoforo Tencalla of Lake Gorda. They feature tales from Apuleus’ work “The Golden Ass.” Although some of the Castle now acts as government offices, you can attend a concert in the second best concert hall in Austria, the Haydn Hall.
