Everywhere in Eisenstadt, you will find evidences of their favorite composer Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809). As the Prince’s Music Director – first vicekapellmeister than full -director, he travelled with the Prince’s court. This took him over a period of several years to Eisenstadt. He stayed in the city between 1766 and 1778. Much of this time, he spent at the Esterházy Schloss or Castle. Yet, probably to keep some sense of sanity, he did have his own place in town. This is the Haydn Haus on Joseph Haydn Gasse.

Haydn bought the Haydn House in 1776. It is two houses over from a house Beethoven stayed in during the early 19th century. Today, you can visit the house and its museum. It tries to give you a comprehensive understanding of the life of this composer the “Father of the Syphony”. You can browse through some Haydn memorabilia and mementoes such as a 1780 Hammerflügel grand piano. The museum is also open to special exhibits that focus on Haydn and other composers connected with the town.
