Krystal nacht was devastating to many Jewish synagogues in Austria. The buildings became the object of plundering thugs. Precious religious artifacts became breakage. Some synagogues never recovered. This is not true of the Jewish Synagogue in Eisenstadt.

The current Austrian Jewish Museum in Eisenstadt was once home to the chief administrator and banker of three successive Hapsburg rulers. Simon Wertheimer, the owner of this particular home on Unterberg Strasse, also became the chief Rabbi of Eisenstadt’s Jews than the Chief Rabbi of the Hungary Jewery. On the first floor of the Museum, you will find Wertheimer’s Schul. It dates from the early 18th century. The trompe l’oeil décor is from the 19th. The museum focuses on religious items and the Jewish religion. Chains hanging to the posts of the exterior walls remind the visitor that the streets around the synagogue were blocked off to ensure religious observances on the Sabbath. If you have time, pay a visit to the local Jewish cemeteries. They rank among the best-preserved in Austria.
