During the European Capital of Culture Year, 2003, Graz undertook to construct a few buildings. One of them was the modern “Friendly Alien” the Kunsthaus modern and contemporary art gallery on the River Mur. Another innovative structure, also on the river, was the Murinsel. In fact, the Murinsel became one of the major projects during that year.

The Murinsel, commonly referred to as the Island of Mur or simply, Mur, is not far from the Kunsthaus. Simplistically stated, it is a man-made island in the middle of the river. The architect was the renowned modernist designer Vito Acconci. Two separate walkways unite the island to the riverbanks. In actuality, the Mur, bobs on the surface of the River Mur. It resembles not so much an island as a giant clamshell, open for all to see. This island creates a unifying base between the two opposite riverbanks. Two concrete and metal walkways sweep from shore to island. In the midst of this clamshell island is a small café. You can sit here on a sunny afternoon, sipping coffee, while the water swirls all around you. On other days, you can arrive to catch a performance at the island’s amphitheater.
