One of the common sights in Graz is people gathered near the city’s Glockenspiel. It is a flashback to a simpler time. It reflects upon the past of the region and the city. It also displays what makes the city a little different from other urban developments in Austria.

The Glockenspiel is not an ancient creation. This large music box dates from 1903. It sits high on a clock above the square, the result of a private citizen, not a government or public body. The attraction of the Glockenspiel is a daily event for the hours of 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. As the bells chime the time, the mullioned windows open and two figures appear. One is a small wooden male dressed in lederhosen. He raises a tankard high above his head, toasting the crowd below. He is joined by a female attired in a dirndl. When they meet, they dance as an old folk tune plays. When the dance is over, they each disappear into their own window home. At the appropriate time, they will reappear and perform the same routine over again.
