The city of Graz in Austria is similar to Vienna in its medical facilities. It has more than one aimed at treating the sick and ill. In fact, Graz has 8 hospitals as well as several private clinics. The largest hospital in the city is the Landeskrankenhaus (LKH) Graz (University clinic).

The University Hospital or Clinic is located in a beautiful Art Nouveau structure dating from 1902 to 1912. At the time of construction, the new Graz hospital became one of the most modern in the country. Yet, the origins of the hospital actually date back to January 1788 and Franz Josef II. It began as a small structure and continued to grow over the years. Like the Austrian General Hospitals (Allgemeines Krankenhaus or AKH), this one is supported by the state government. Its size is demonstrates by the number of beds and patients the hospital serves. The LKH-University of Graz has a staff of 7,190 servicing some 1,556 beds. Departments include those of internal medicine, gynecology, orthopedics, psychiatry, neurology and children and youth.
