The most famous landmark of Graz is not a church. The Cathedral or even the Schloss Eggberg does not hold this pride of place in the hearts of the people of Graz. This role belongs to only one monumental structure. It is the sole property of the Uhrturm.

The Uhrturm, or Watchtower, is the single most identifiable landmark in the city of Graz. It dates from1560. The tower has two identifiable features. The first is the clock. The second is the wooden parapet above the clock. The wooden parapet is from the 16th century. For centuries, it acted as a lookout post for firemen. They would sit here and see if a fire raged in any part of the city. If it did, they would sound the alarm. The bell tolled for such disasters and announced an upcoming execution. Later, it announced the closing time of all pubs in the city. However, the most watched aspect of the Uhrturm is its clock. The clock, although the mechanism is only a couple of centuries old, serves a very useful function. It does still tell the time. Yet, what continue to amaze visitors are the hands of the face. In order to be able to see the time clearly from far distances, the original clock had one big hand to indicate the hours. When they added a minute hand, it was a small hand. This is the exact opposite of current timepieces.
