The Burg was once the imperial home of Frederick III, He has had inscribed the letters AEIOU, to indicate it was his structure. This was something Frederick inscribed on all his buildings. Today, it is no longer a royal residence. It houses the Styrian Government.

Frederick III, at that time Duke of Styria, engaged a builder for a new home in Graz in 1438. Work continued under his son, Emperor Maximilian I. The result, in 1499, was the Gothic spiral staircase. Consisting of around 49 steps, it divides into two before reuniting on each floor in the north-west wing. In Graz, people refer to it as the “Stairs of Reconciliation.” The Burgot or palace gate is also Gothic. Yet, much of this building is no longer Gothic. It is Baroque. Additions extended the floor area. A Charles Wing and a Records Wing became part of the Burg. With these additions came the sgrafitto décor. As you approach the Burg, you will notice the various statues on its green. This is the “Gallery of Honor.” All the statues are, or were, significant Styrians.
