In the late 1800s, the city called on the renowned Viennese theater architect team of the 19th century, Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer to design an opera house for Graz. They completed the project in 1899. The style was there usual Baroque. The model chosen for the work was by Johann Fischer von Erlach. Von Erlach was a native son of Graz. He, however, never did erect a building in his hometown.

The Graz Opera House is the second largest in Austria. The opening performance in September 1899 was not opera, but the drama William Tell by Schiller. The building remained unchanged until World War II. A bomb destroyed the portico. This simplified the façade. The interior, however, remains the same. There you can see the wide staircase and the sumptuous box seats in the auditorium. The partially gilded stucco ceilings are the original. Only the new uninvasive stage addition by Günter Wawrik in the 1980s has altered the overall design. Currently the Opera house seats 1,800 individuals. In 2001, the Opera House won the Best Opera house of the Year award.
