The Mausoleum of Ferdinand II in Graz is a monumental work. You can visit it after or before you enter the Domkirche. The Mausoleum is a tomb for Ferdinand and his family. Although he lies elsewhere, it serves as a reminder. It is also a marvelous work of art.

Construction on the Mausoleum began in 1614 under an Italian architect, Pietro de Pomis. It was, Pietro Valnegro, however, who completed the project. A small building with a narrow façade, it has a commanding presence. Tucked in beside the Domkirche, it is an apt exhibition of the style of Mannerist Baroque. Inside, you can view the frescoes and stucco work of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1690). The altars are elaborate, the work of Jesuit craftsmen. You can go below to the crypt. Here, you will find the internment place of Ferdinand’s wife and son. Stand and look upwards. There is a hole in the center of the dome of the crypt. It allows you to view the dome that lies above the Mausoleum. There is also the crypt of Ferdinand’s parents. Charles II and Maria are in a red marble sarcophagus.
