The Palais Saurau dates back to 1566 when Pankraz von Windischgratz decided to erect a large residential palace. The result was a Renaissance structure. Like most buildings, the Palais Saurau did not remain in the same architectural style for long. While itstill retains a Renaissance portal, much of the building was altered during the 18th century when architectural tastes moved away from the stately and simple to the more ornate.

By 1630, ownership of the house had passed into the hands of the Saurau family. In the 18th century, they saw a Renaissance structure and wanted to turn it into the latest architectural fancy – the Baroque. The interior gained homogenous state halls and, in 1730, the look of the beautiful Baroque gateway was executed with its wrought-iron fan-shape. The inner courtyards retained their Renaissance galleries. Their vast size impresses, but what most people remember is a small dark figure of a Turk looking down on them. The date of this small statue, and the reason for its existence, remain tantalizing unknown. Nevertheless, you can catch a glimpse of him, his sword and shield raised, gazing down at all the passer bys from his perch on the cornice.
