The beautiful and elegant palace of Schloss Eggenberg is one of Graz’ treasures. According to legend, It is the product of Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg. At the time, he was the Chief Minister for the Emperor Ferdinand II. It was his intent to celebrate his position as Governor of Inner Austria in 1625.

The Schloss sits in a large deer park, a 17th Baroque century palace. The work is by de Pomis. The size is impressive. There are 365 windows and 24 staterooms. The state apartments feature elaborate frescoes and intense stucco décor. The most elaborate and unique room is the Planet Hall. If you wander into it, you will notice immediately the reason for its name. The white stucco and friezes by Hans Adam Weissenkircher, are all based on the planets. He recreates seven planets, four elements and all 12 Zodiacal signs. He is also responsible for the décor in other rooms. There are mythological-themed rooms. He also is responsible for rooms with contemporary and classical scenes and themes. If this is not sufficient to hold your attention, you may want to visit any of the three museums housed in the Schloss. They include a hunting Museum, an Archeological Museum and a Numismatic Museum.
