The University of Graz is more than an educational facility. It is home to several educational and cultural opportunities. The Botanical Gardens, for example, are part of the Botany Department. The University is also home to the Criminological Museum.

Hans Gross (1847-1915), a forceful man in the field of Criminology, sought to make the scholars and scientists of the time recognize the academic qualifications of Criminology. In 1912, the Imperial Institute of Criminology opened its offices at the University of Graz. This was a first in the world. Graz and Hans Gross made it possible for the study of Criminology and its implementation to receive the respect it deserved. The Criminological Museum is his brainchild. It began as a teaching museum. The material collections are actual court material. The items, arranged and classified according to 32 specific categories, date mainly from his time period. The more interesting categories are included under forensics, weapons, poisons, scene of the crime photographs, criminal and specie handwriting, burglary tools, and footprint molds with accompanying photographs and statistics.
