There are some Museums in Graz truly unique. One such museum is the Museum of Perception. Another museum that qualifies for this title is the Hanns Schell Collection. It is a Lock and Key Museum in the city’s northwest

The Hanns Schell Collection contains some 9000 objects. All of them are facets of the key making industry; all signify some type of instrument for security. The scope of the collection is truly outstanding. There are lock and key mechanism from the times of the Romans as well as those from the modern era. There are intricate and rare items from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. There are boxes, chests, caskets, keys, locks and other items. Some of them are quite decorative belying their usage. They consist of wrought iron, wood, silver, gold or ivory. A more recent exhibit on a separate floor looks at locking devices from Africa. Yet, one of the most popular items in the Hanns Schell collection must be the three keys to the Medieval chastity belts.
