Art comes in all different types. Architecture is the same. In Graz you find contrasting means of artistic and architectural expressions. There is the Landesmuseum Joanneum. Its architecture and content are essentially reflective of the past. In direct contrast in both content and architectural home to the Johanneum is the Kunsthaus.

The Kunsthaus is a contemporary art gallery and museum. It is fitting, therefore, that the structure only dates from 2003. Its nickname is the “friendly alien.” This provides you with some indication of the design of the building. A completely modern creation by Peter cook and Colin Fourier from London, it reflects a different vision of Graz. It is not Baroqueor gothic. It resembles a blue flattened se creature with pointy tentacles that light up at night. Within are vast exhibition rooms. At the top of this structure is an open area. From here, you can obtain spectacular views of the city and beyond. The different parts of the Kunsthaus are linked together by a system of escalators and spiral walkways. The building only displays work from the 1960s onward.
