You can find a lot of what makes Graz unique on other the main byways. On Elisabethstrasse, you can spend time admiring two different but related historical exhibits. One is the Zeitgeschichtelabor in the University Institute for Contemporary History. The other is in the backyard of the same institute.

The Zeitgeschichtelabor or Laboratory for Contemporary History is a unique small and specialist museum. The founders are the University Institute for Contemporary History. Within this building, you will find several rooms full of exhibits on local, regional and national contemporary history. The rooms also offer multi-media presentations on the subjects. Some of the special exhibits are thought provoking and disturbing. In 2006, the Institute had a photographic and documentary exhibit on life in a concentration camp. If you step out of the building and enter its backyard, you will see another reference to contemporary history. Here stands the Sarajevo Cross. It is a memorial to commemorate the suffering and death of both the civilians and soldiers in the Bosnian wars.
