In the 16th century, Graz began to keep an armory to supply local citizens and mercenaries. This Provincial arsenal is open to visitors. If you are at all interested in weaponry, go to the Landeszeughaus. It is a museum for anyone who wants to know what type of armor and weapons were employed by the people of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Landeszeughaus or Provincial arsenal, is the result of a communal effort. The Landestande, or local nobility, stock-piled weapons here. The need for more space resulted in the construction of a larger building in 1642/1643. The five-storey structure kept the weapons readily available. You can see them almost as if they were waiting for use. Except for the loss of a few cannon during the Napoleonic Wars, the weapons remain intact in number and condition. There are, in fact, some 30,000 weapons on display. These include suits of armor (engraved and plain), helmets, breastplates, swords and pikes. There are some cannon and mortars to round off the displays. The sheer amount of weaponry on view can be daunting so, come prepared.
