There are several different types of museums in Graz. You can visit a wide assortment covering everything from weaponry to fine art. There is a Museum of Perception, a Children’s Museum, a Coin Museum and several History Museums. One of the local history museums is the Volkskundermuseum. Its focus is on the folklore of the Styria region.

The Volkskundemuseum or Folklore Museum resides in a former Capuchin Monastery. It has exhibits on household and farm equipment as well as rural life. There are several rooms designed to provide you with a glimpse into the life of the Styria region. These reconstructed home interiors are amazingly detailed. You can even see the only “Rauschstube” – smoke room, in Graz. There are exhibits concerning the history and use of traditional costumes. You can also uncover the lore of folk religion in the region. After you are through wandering through the museum, you can step out and buy some traditional crafts at the stores nearby.
