Once upon a time in Graz, the town held a wood market in Holzmarktplatz. In the 19th century, the market was gone. The square, however, remained under a new name – Kaiser Josef Platz. This is the home of the Farmer’s Market in Graz.

The Farmers’ Market in Graz is a busy one. The farmers bring in their produce, including organic food. Specialties of the town are apples, pumpkin seed oil and scarlet runner beans (Käferbohnen). Austria grows some 90% of Austria’s pumpkins and 80% of their apples. You can buy locally. Purchasing fresh pumpkin seed oil and taste some of the traditional varieties of apples. These include Ilzer Rose, Kronprinz Rudolf and Schafnase. There is also the mouth watering smell of fresh-baked bread and smoked sausages to tempt you to buy a morning snack or lunch.
