Austria has a high level of education. It receives local and international students in its universities, both public and private. Among its top six general universities, the second largest is the Karl-Franzens-Universität or the University of Graz. It has around 24,000 students and five-faculties.

The University of Graz is the oldest university in the country. It dates back to 1585 when it was founded by the Archduke Charles II. Originally a Catholic-run facility, it began its flirtation with a state-run system under Joseph II in 1782. At this point, it became a lyceum with a focus on medicine and theology. In 1827, the Lycee became once again a university, opening under the current name. In 1895, it obtained a new building and began establishing a reputation. After a severe loss of students and teachers during WWII, the University bounced back. The Faculty of Medicine became an autonomous body in 2004. Today, it has five faculties. They are Theology, Law, Social and Economic Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, Environmental and Regional Science and Education.
