If you want to view a classic example of historicism, go to Sparbersbachgasse. Here, you can see an example of a neo-Gothic church. This is the Herz Jesu Kirche (Church of the Heart of Christ). A simple brick structure, the largest church in the region, its 109.6-meter tower pierces the sky above Graz. It is the tallest in the region of Steiermark. This makes it the third tallest tower in the country of Austria.
The architect Georg Hauberrisser der Ältere began construction of the Herz Jesu Kirche in 1881. He did not complete the building until 1898. It is a single-nave church of red brick. Besides the tower and the material, you should note the interior. The frescoes are by Max Godfried and Hans Lukesch. There are some 18 of these immense painting inside. The stained glass windows offer you a rare opportunity to see examples of painted glass in the neo-Gothic style. The bells still ring. They have, however, been cast anew. The old ones became a part of the war effort during World War I.
