Hotels near Mariahilfkirche in Graz - Best deals & budget rates!

Graz has many spectacular churches. They range from a simplistic Romanesque to the stunningly ornate Baroque. There are cathedrals and parish churches. There are chapels and basilicas. There is also the pilgrimage church of Mariahilf.

The Maria-Hilf-Kirche is an example of early Baroque. Its twin towers date from 1744 and are a delight to the eye. They soar upwards, each of them crowned by a tapered onion-shaped dome ending in a brilliant yellow sunburst. The pediment of the structure has an interesting sculpture ensemble. It features a powerful Archangel Michael tossing a demon towards the street. The older structure is by court favorite, Pietro de Pomis. You can see the plaque marking his tomb within on a pillar just left of the high altar. The façade is the product of J. Hueber. The high altar, by de Pomis, contains and frames the reason behind the descent of the pilgrims upon this church. It is a picture of Mary hovering above the sick and poor. It dates from 1611. The ornate silver frame in which it peacefully sits is from 1766.
