Austria with its plethora of Castles delights visitors. There are the magnificent Castles in Salzburg and Vienna. There are also the local castles in smaller villages. Yet, where you have castles, you are bound to have ruins. One of these is the Ruins of the Fragenstein near Zirl.

The ruins of the Castle of Frangenstein sit up on the steep rock of the Zirlerberg. They are just a short distance to the north-west of the town of Zirl.The origins of the Castle date for the need to provide protection for the route to Bavaria. In the 13th century, Frangenstein ruled this outcrop of land. Documents place the castle here for several years from 1227 to 1254, in the hands of this family. The castle also served as a prison for those who crossed the Frangensteins. Later, the Castle of Fragenstein became the property of Maximilian I. He chose to use it as a hunting lodge, a retreat from his duties. The glory days were brief. The castle soon fell into wreck and ruin after the great Maximilian died. Today, it stands neglected. You can visit it by hiking from Zirl.
