Inside the Hofkirche or Franziskaner Kirche, you can see the empty tomb of Maximilian I.Yet, you should visit this Imperial Church for more than a visit to this monumental piece of art. The Hiofkirche holds a priceless small chapel. This is the Silberne Kappelle.

The Silberne Kapple is the 16th century Silver Chapel. You can reach it by simply walking up the steps and entering inside. Within, you will find the Funerary Monument of Archduke Ferdinand II (died in 1595), the founder of the Hofkirche, and his well-loved commoner wife, Philippine Welser (died in 1580). Ferdinand is the great-grandson of Maximilian I. The Silver Chapel was built as part of the Hofkirche in 1578. The tombs of Ferdinand and his wife are the creation of Alexander Colin, a Dutch artist. They are executed in marble. You can also find within the Silver Chapel a beautifully designed silver plated image of the Virgin Mary, the reason for the Chapel’s name. In front of her and half way up the wall, is the suspended armor of Ferdinand. It remains forever in a kneeling position before the Virgin.
