If there is one place in Innsbruck you must visit, it is the Maximilianeum. You may know it by its other name. This is the Golenes Dachl or “Golden Roof.” On a sunny day, the 2,600 plus copper tiles seem to catch fire and glow above the city.

The Golden Roof dates from 1494 to 1486. It began as a Gothic structure only to be radically modified during the 19th century. Originally part of a palace of Duke Friedrich of Tirol, it has since become one of the landmarks of the city. It retains its original oriel window (1500) and a Gothic loggia. The interior of the loggia is by Jörg Kölderers and features scenes from contemporary aristocratic life in Austria. On the second floor balcony, you will find reliefs depicting the life and times of Maximilian. They include one of him with his two wives. There is also one of him and his jester. Inside the building, you can also visit a small museum the actual Maximilianeum. Included is a video show on his life and times.
