The Schloss Ambras, a beautiful piece of artwork in its own right, is home to several small museums. If you can, make the pilgrimage to the Castle. It has everything from curiosities to fine art work to ancient armor. It is sure to please more than one member of a family.

One place to visit is the Lower Castle. Here you can find the Kunst and Wunderkammer collection. This Art and Wonders or Curiosities Collection has something to interest everyone. There are scientific objects and oddities amidst beautifully carved objects. Here, you can find the Nuremberg Plate from 1528. In the Rüsthammer, or Armor collection, you will see rare examples of armor. Many of them are 15th century pieces. Included among the many selections is wedding armor. Another type of museum within the Upper part of the Schloss consists of portraiture. The Protrait Galerie displays portrait after portrait and wall upon wall of the Hapsburgs. Over here you can see Charles VIII and over there, Maria Anna of Spain. Over 200 portraits are found in the Schloss Gallery. The artists’ names are more precious these days than the Hapsburg sitters. They include Diego Velsázquez, Titian, Van Dyck, Anthony Moore and Lukas Cranach.
