Innsbruck is home to many interesting museums. The Ferdinaneum is a one type of museum. If, however, you are interested in the folklore and customs of the Tyrol region, you should go to the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum. It is across from the Hofkirche.

Tyrolean Museum of Folk Art covers three floors of a former Franciscan Monastery. It opened its doors in 1888. A project of the Tyrolean Trades Association, it now contains a wealth of material pertaining to Tyrolean arts, crafts and culture. There are as many as 30,000 items within the museum. These range from displays of traditional Christmas cribs to folk costumes to the macabre masks for Carnivals. There are exhibits of pottery and glass products. There are displays of other crafted practical objects including cane chairs, wrought-iron work and textiles. You can see hundreds of household objects and furnishings. Entire rooms of the Museum are now recreations of Tyrolean farm household rooms. These cover all variations of architectural periods from the Gothic to the Rococo. Many of these historic items are the only survivors of demolished homes.
