Wilten Abbey or Stift Wilten is beyond the historic core of Innsbruck. To reach it, you have to travel to the suburb of Wilten. When you have arrived, you have several artistic monuments to view. These include the Wilten Basilica, the Wilten Abbey and the Wilten Abbey Church. IF you have the time and the energy afterwards, you should visit the Museum of the Premonstratensian Canon abbey of Wilten.

The Abbey Museum elaborates on its wealth, power and beauty. It takes you through the Abbey’s history by showing you a wide variety of art and practical art pieces form its history. Since the Abbey dates from 1138, there is a lot of material to cover. You will discover sumptuous tapestries and linen. There are pieces of pewter, silver and gold, carefully and intricately crafted by hand. The museum has documents, Gothic altarpieces and many finely wrought pieces for you to peruse. It also possesses the curious and the rare. There is a copy of the Wilten Chalice from 1180 and the intriguing “Dragon’s tongue”.
