Maximilian I decided the best defense of Innsbruck required the construction of an armory. He used it to manufacture gunpowder and cannon. Today, this building, the Zeughaus, is home to a museum. Instead of manufacturing arms, it creates or recreates the history of the Tirol region from the beginning of time.

The Zeughaus doles out history in chronological order. It starts with a geological section. Featured are the various minerals mined in the area, particularly silver. One section concentrates on the prolific silver mines of Schwarz. There is also sufficient notice paid to the religious violence and problems of the 16th century. You can view pamphlets and religious treatises from the Medieval era. The most space in the retelling of the tales of Tyrol falls to the innkeeper and nationalist Andreas Hofer, leader of a rebellion against Napoleon in the 16th century. The section on Hofer includes a vast amount of material including a 1929 film and political posters. There are even artifacts such as coffee tins and playing cards with his face, on display. As you wander through some of the exhibition, you will hear the sounds of Tyrolean composers.
