Innsbruck University( Universität Innsbruck) is officially known as the Royal Imperial Leopold Francis University. The university originated as a Catholic College. It was part of the Jesuit complex in Innsbruck. It opened in 1562, but did not achieve the status of university until 1677 under a decree of Emperor Leopold I. The university suffered several problems over the next few decades. It was closed and reopened. Only under Emperor Franz Josef I did it begin to grow, adding the faculties of Law and Philosophy (1826). In the early 20th century, a building program launched the now entrenched university. Although the wars had a negative impact, the University reconsolidated its structure. Between 1980 and 1986, the school launched a new building program.

As a result of its focus and its structure, Innsbruck is the third largest university in Austria. It ranks after Vienna and Graz. The student population is around 23,000. There are about 2,400 teachers teaching over 7,000 courses in 15 faculties.
