The Dom or cathedral in the city of Innsbruck is the Baroque church of St. James. As is common in Austria and elsewhere, the church began as a smaller structure. In this case, the Domkirche began as a simple Romanesque church in 1180. In 1438, the process of reconstruction reinvented the church. In 1772, the architectural style the builders adopted was Baroque.

Johann Jakob Herkommer began the process of Baroquifying the church. His nephew, Johann George Fischer was left to finish the work. Inside, the fruits of their labor are blatant. You walk across a variegated marble floor probably by Cristofor and Teodor Beneditt from Trentino. The illusionist stucco ceilings feature the Life of St. James by Cosman Damian Asam, recopied after the bombing damage of 1944. In fact, the Assam brothers, Cosman and Egid Quirin, are responsible for most of the interior painting and fresco work in the church. The pulpit is from 1725, the work of Nikolaus Moll while the Madonna hanging above the altar is by Lukas Cramach the Elder, a German painter.
