The Spitalskirche in Kitzbühel was part of a hospital complex. It dates from 1412, the same year as the hospital. Its intent was to serve the needs of the workers and patients in the hospital. The building vanished. Progress demanded it make way for a new road. Yet, the result was actually an improvement on the old structure. The Gothic religious edifice, in 1836, became transformed into a gem of a neo-Classical structure.

The small, neo-Classical church is the repository for a number of items of merit. When you visit, be sure to look at the group forming the Gothic crucifixion. It resides in the nave. The figures in the group, titled “Our Lord of the Stairs,” are almost life-size. They include Jesus carrying his crucifix as well as the figures of Simon of Cyrene and a Myrmidon or henchman. Also, wander over to the altarpiece. It is by the most prolific artist in the city of Kitzbühel – Simon Benedikt Faistenberger.
