Kitzbühel became a city in 1271. It did not, however, build the current Ratthaus, or city hall, until the 16th century. Construction began on the Ratthaus in 1531. The building reflected the architecture of the time.

The 1531 structure did not prove sufficient as the representative of the administrative seat for the city. Therefore, reconstruction of the Ratthaus took place in 1548. In the 19th century, further changes occurred in the structure. The Kirchberger Tor or Neutor Gate, became a part of the structure. Further additions and restructuring affected the Ratthaus in the 20th century. The modifications of 1954 and 1955 include an indication of the economic basis of the city. A relief of Franz Reisch, a former mayor of the city, is besides the main entrance. Reisch, in 1892 and 1893, introduced and promoted winter sports as tourism to the city. In 2006, further renovations an extension began on the red, two-gated Ratthaus.
