St. Giles finished construction in 1652. It replaced an earlier religious edifice dating from the 13th century. There are still ancient tombstones providing this connection with the past. The new church, however, had something the other lacked. This is a very tall church steeple or tower.

If you come to visit Klagenfurt, do take time to visit the church. There are many interesting examples of artwork, including frescoes and bronze carvings, within its doors. However, once you have given the church the attention it deserves, spend some time with its tower. Besides its carillon, the tower has a safe place to perch. At the top of the Klagenfurt Church of St. Egyd Tower, you will witness an amazing view of the old city and its environs. This is an observation tower from where, on a clear day, you will be able to see as far distant as the Worthersee Lake.
