The parish church of Klagenfurt is the Church of St. Egyd (St Giles). Giles is both the Patron Saint of cripples and blacksmiths. Although St. Giles only dates from the 17th century, it is a charming church with some eye-catching carvings. You can visit it on Pfarrplatz.

The church dates from 1652. The man who commissioned its construction was Johann Friedrich Orsini Rosenberg. It replaced a previous church on its site, the oldest church in Klagenfurt (1255). This new structure was Baroque. The tower is extremely large. Within the church, you can wander through thechapels admiring the various pieces of art. In the second chapel on the right as you enter, you can see the totem pole bronze carvings of Ernst Fuchs, one of Austria’s avante-garde artists. In a nearby chapel, you can pay a visit to the tomb of Julian Green (1900 – 1998). Green was a French-born, American novelist. He spent some time in Klagenfurt and requested to be buried here. In the choir, Fromiller created the frescoes. In the nave, the work “St. Giles Head presented to the People by Angels” is by Joseph Molockh.
