One of the most popular plazas or squares in Klagenfurt is Neuer Platz or New Square. It is a people- watching place. There are also shops and monumental structures to view. Yet, the reason many people come to Neuer Plats is to see the emblem of Klagenfurt. This is the Dragon Fountain.

The Dragon Fountain is one of the city’s prize possessions. It dates from 1593 and is the product of Ulrich Vogelsang. This bronze fabled being is winged, comparable to the old Lindwurm of legendary stories. It falls into the devourer-of-maidens category of dragons. In 1636, the city decidd to make an addition to their celebrated Dragon fountain in the square. Michael Hönel added a Hercules-type figure of Chlorite. The new creation made its way to the square in a solemn procession. Three hundred white clad youths bore it to its plintz. Today, you can view the Dragon Fountain as you sit in the square watching the world go by.
