The Landhaus in Klagenfurt began its history as an arsenal in the 16th century. Construction started in 1574 with a completion date of 1591. It next became the state center of the Carinthian region. Today, it houses provincial government offices.

The structure has two staircase towers, symmetrically placed for perfect balance. The arcaded courtyard is two-storied. Both indicate its Renaissance roots with their pureness of design. The onion domes topping the two towers, however, is characteristic of a Baroque modification. Yet, it what is within the Landhaus that continues to attract visitors. In particular, they come to see the Grosser Wappensaal. This is the Great Armorial or Heraldic Hall. Josef Ferdinand Fromiller (1693-1760) is responsible for its sumptuous decorations - specifically the 655 heraldic coats of arms. They all belong to the different estates of the Carinthians. There is also a magnificent Trompe l’oeil on the ceilings of the hall. It gives the illusion of a vaulted ceiling. You can also visit the Kleinen Wapepensaal where Fromiller has executed another 298 coats of arms and a ceiling fresco on “Truth as the Daughter of Time.”
